Topiary Building

This low-budget, mixed-use conversion of an early 80’s building started with an abandoned rice shop/house on the lower two floors, and two small apartments on the third floor in Aobadai, a Nakameguro neighborhood on the Meguro river which has become the “Soho” of Tokyo. The lush ivy has been cultivated to give an otherwise nondescript building great distinction, and produce a vertical greenscape.
The Topiary Building now accommodates an architects studio on three levels. The roof has been outfitted with a usable terrace with outstanding views. Refurbishment includee all new mechanical, electrical and plumbing infrastructure – raised floors for network cabling, new bathrooms, upgraded windows, and significant additional improvements. This intervention has since inspired conversions of several underutilized buildings nearby into restaurants, cafes and patisseries. The Topiary Building has become a landmark in the fashionable Nakameguro neighborhood.
